My Mom Liked My Book (Early Reviews of Murder by Algorithm)

Posted on 2026-02-162026-02-16 by beagley

The critics have sent me their thoughts on Murder by Algorithm (which I must of course here repeat is available wherever books are sold).

While the New York Times is saving their review for a slow news day, and the New Yorker can’t get to my book right now because that one New Yorker guy dropped his monocle behind the radiator, there are many other unbiased sources of literary criticism.

First, from my mom:

“Hi-finished reading your book. I liked it and would love to get a chance to talk about it! Love Mom.”

Next, from my dad:

“The narrative woke me up and made the book difficult to put down…I didn’t want it to end. The author provides lyrical description that triggers powerful visual images…and adds to our consideration of the serious issues inside the Turing test. This book has AIs on both sides of the moral divide (and in the middle.)”

From a friend and publisher in Vancouver:

“…artfully melds the tradition of the whodunnit murder mystery with the queries and quandaries ripped from tomorrow’s–if not today’s–headlines. From its attention to identity and memory to carefully crafted storytelling, Murder by Algorithm is worth a read.”

And, finally, from my dad’s college roommate’s awesome spouse who I think might also have been my mom’s roommate but I can’t remember right now but she’s really cool:

“I couldn’t stop reading. Murder by Algorithm is excellent. The writing is intelligent and funny and the story is compelling. Beagley does an amazing job of understanding a complex personality from the inside–which is important because the imperfect human narrator is our primary detective. Their AI companion is a revelation–you’ll have to read it to find out. I’m looking forward to the TV series. But more: I’m looking forward to the next book.”

I feel joy when I find out people looked at my art. If you read my book and liked it, please write a review and/or message me. And if you post it to social media, please tag me (or repost me or however that works).

If you read my book and didn’t like it, please reuse your copy by giving it to someone you know who is a (very forgiving) fan of science fiction murder mysteries.

In the miracle of modern publishing, I could adjust the book’s cover.

It could include the blurb “I liked it. -the author’s mom.”

It’s tempting.
